It's official: no Tiger. I include ESPN.com's version of the story because of the comments that follow it. I find this comment particularly interesting, because it's evidently from the kind of person whose first love is not golf, but was supposed to ushered into golf fandom by Mr. Woods:

... [T]his is a pretty sizable blow to the PGA. You tout a playoff system all year and then your top player, who has owned 2007, decides that the first 25% of the playoffs aren't worthy of his presence. Tough to attach much credibility to this series of events. Will be doubly bad if Mickelson/Furyk have any lingering injury problems and aren't competitive or have to pull out.
... Golf continues to be impossible for those of us who live in the greater NYC area. A major every couple of years, and that's it. No other top events are held within a reasonable distance, and now Woods will be skipping the Barclays. Myself and my fiance purchased tickets to this event, at $106 a pop for a weekly pass. when you consider that she has little golf knowledge, and wants to see TW, coupled with the cost of travel etc, this is a fairly high sum to pay to NOT see the main attraction whom we assumed was going.
Poor guy. Thanks to golf, his best live sports option this summer is Barry Bonds at Shea.
